One cannot help but examine the luxurious art deco and Amsterdam school prints, heavy-duty woods, and soft, worn in leathers. A hodge-podge of Rock N’ Roll glamour; a luxurious, exaggerated lodge for gypsies. Paintings and photographs decorate the walls. A delicious world full of ghosts of the past; the very crème de la crème of generation upon generation of creativity.
<div

The newspaper mostly features up-and-coming musicians, artists, and photographers.

Likhova with the first issue of The Passenger; Photo by Yevgeniya Yelkina

Likhova came to New York at a very young age from Moscow, Russia. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in advertising and marketing communications, she worked and studied in Paris and Berlin, eventually working for Italian Vogue as an assistant fashion editor, and also doing some styling on the side. Eager to disengage from the fashion “battlefield,” Likhova yearned for a project that was her own.

Thus, The Passenger was born.

Taking on the role of creative director and publisher of the newspaper, Likhova gives The Passenger a very authentic, 70s vibe. Emulating her and Maione’s collection of vintage paper Rolling Stone magazines, Likhova has stayed true to the authenticity of that same aesthetic.

Inspired by her boyfriend’s Rock N’ Roll style, Likhova really wanted The Passenger to exude the classic themes of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“[Garard] has the most amazing style, and Rock N’ Roll personality that we both have, and I want to share that with other people,” Ms. Likhova said. “We are really inspired by late 60s, early 70s and you can see that through our environment, and you can see that through my work.”

The beauty of The Passenger lies in its timelessness. Anyone from a sophisticated Rock N’ Roller, to a rock star wannabee, and even a 75-year-old seeker of nostalgia, can lose his/herself in the whimsical pages of this visually stimulating newspaper.

Fashion also plays a huge role in Likhova’s lifestyle as well. Focusing more on vintage fashion and not so much on contemporary styles, she and Maione admire Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen; but the truly remarkable items in their closets come from the wonderful years of the past.

“Vintage is a really big presence in my life… it is nice to wear a garment that no body else has or that you have never seen before; it is a piece of history.”

Her favorite garments in the entire world? Caftans; which should be worn by men, women, and children alike.

Likhova’s motto when it comes to dressing? “What would Jimi Hendrix wear?”

She truly emphasizes the idea of taking on a lifestyle, one that has its roots from the past.

“You feel like you are wearing something that nobody else has. I can look at a photograph from a certain time period, and I can make that world come to life through vintage clothing, ” Likhova says, as she holds up a 1920s beaded dress.

It is a lifetime lifestyle in the making.

In describing her inspiration, Likhova explains that it is people, not so much the clothes that make her tick.

“People in fashion inspire me the most. There are imaginations out there, that your mind can not even come close to constructing together.”

Likhova enjoying her creation; Photo by Yevgeniya Yelkina

Likhova’s accomplishments in the publishing world are certainly ones for celebration. With her newspaper in full swing, Likhova looks forward to the future. She is currently working on a photography book that will showcase many collaborations with photographers that have made her visions come to life. She is also set on creating a brand focused around her newspaper, called The Passenger Collection, which will encapsulate a whole stew of things, such as shirts, sunglasses, shoes, bottle openers, and other travel accessories. She also hopes to set up individual Passenger shops that resemble train cars all over the world.

In five years, Likhova hopes to continue to expand her brand, traveling back and forth between New York and Los Angeles, whilst maintaining a mental tranquility.

“I would like to have my empire going strong, and be in a peaceful, happy place in the relationship that I’m in now.”

Keep an eye out for this it girl, as she continues to make a splash on to the fashion/music scene in the years to come.

The Passenger is available in select locations around New York City and Los Angeles.

For more information, visit: <a

Since the show, Gretchen has moved to Brooklyn, whilst never forgetting her Southwestern roots. She is a leader in eco-friendly fabrics, primarily working with natural materials like leather, silk, wool, linen, bamboo, organic cotton, wood, brass, and gemstones. A year later, she is dreaming big. Gretchen sat down to answer some questions regarding her new life in Brooklyn, and love for fashion design.
1. How did you begin your career as a designer?

I made the decision to go the route of ‘real world’ experience and self-education. I started out modeling as a teenager, then worked in vintage/consignment shops learning about construction/desirability, managed a few boutiques where I grew into lead buyer positions, started working the trade show circuit as a vendor to understand the wholesale market, apprenticed at a bridal designers studio and then moved onto a luxury hand craft leather company, finally launching my own label after about a decade of experiences…

2. How do your rural, western roots inspire you?

I think my aesthetic will perpetually be influenced by my rural upbringing. Rural communities [globally] have very distinct ways of dressing, mine was a community of cowboys and Indians. What I hope is to bring the iconic nature of these two identities into a modern urban setting, while reinventing how we think of those identities. I’m intent of using it as a resource, while also not being tye cast as a bohemian design who only references such a singular viewpoint…However, I will always feel my prettiest in a pretty dress and cowboy boots w/ some chunky turquoise jewelry on. And that ‘spirit’ will always be the ethos of my label.

"Black Tears and Strange Dream," FW2011 Collection; Photographed by Marco Pedde

3. Can you describe your creative process?

My passion is my process. I spend most of my time researching. Moodboarding perpetually and paying close attention to what I see on the streets. I tend to start with a book and album I want to paint into my collection [reading & listening while I design] and from there I start focusing on textiles I want designed…Then I sketch silhouettes, which is more like doing hard-core mathematical equations. As I build my body of work I have to think clearly about how/where I am referencing such concepts to create a balanced ‘vision.’ Lastly playing mix and match with my textiles, giving each enough space to be highlighted within the collections…All the while moodboarding how I want the collection to ‘feel’ and preparing for the visual aspects of my marketing and campaigns. It’s a state of perpetual creativity, which is why I love it.

4. What is your design aesthetic?

My aesthetic is simultaneously minimal and bohemian, romantic and modern, feminine and architectural. I dance between the lines of bohemian and minimalist…are hard line to walk might I say…

5. How has Project Runway helped your career as a designer?

Project Runway was like a missing link in my chain of life. I knew I needed some way of reaching a wider audience, but more so for reaching the people I needed to help me move forward. Being a girl from a very humble and isolated background, I had no resources or support system for my talent. All it did was open up a door I needed open. It was still up to me to walk through it and make my future happen..which is happening as we speak.

"Black Tears and Strange Dream," FW2011 Collection; Photographed by Marco Pedde

6. Looking back, what was the experience like?

One part boot camp, one part intensive summer school, one part lab rat.

7. Which designers do you feel most inspired by?

I think the designs I find most inspiring are the ones that are most authentic. I like seeing people design with purpose and intention. Creativity is the ability to translate your inner thoughts in a new and inspiring way that can capture an audiences attention. And that can come in many different ‘colors’

8. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your “Black Tears and Strange Dream,” FW2011 Collection?

Black Tears and Strange Dream,” is named after a song by Zambian psych rock band The Witch, whose music she listened to throughout its design. Individual pieces are named after cards in the Tarot of the Spirit, and inspiration for the collection ranged from Jean Michel Basquiat to Kurt Cobain, from Buckminster Fuller to Frida Kahlo and the Arizona town of Arcosanti.

9. What are some of the things you are working on now?

I am in the midst of production for ‘Black Tears + Strange Dream’ while in the full throws of S/S 12′ development. I am also currently in the process of interviewing PR firms and Showrooms for next seasons sales. My Piperlime project/collection is set to launch mid July and I will be doing some promotions for soon too. All the while staying open to opportunities and what the universe brings me. I like being challenged and am eager to see what’s next.

10. What should we expect to see from you in the next 6-12 months?

You should expect to have an empty bank account from buying GJ pieces!

Drek Martinez, proves that passion, drive and talent can come in the form of one single person. Drek has travelled to the hottest chic spots of the globe ranging from Marquee Vegas to St. Tropez to NYC, where he is the resident DJ at LAVO NYC. He has had the privilege of playing with DJ A-Trak, Kid Cudi and more. With such experience and charm, It is no wonder that he is requested to spin mixes at various places worldwide. Mauvais Langue had a time-out with the DJ to answer questions ranging from his out-of-the-box musical influences to exciting side projects.

Mauvais Langue: From all the places you have played, what is your favorite city and why?
Drek Martinez: I love traveling to new places and feeling out the energy of new and different crowds. Picking a specific city is kind of difficult because every city has its own particular vibe. I’ve been in New York for two years and I have not been bored even once. It’s the type of city where you can instantly belong, whether it’s in the first two minutes of touching down at the airport or after two years of living here. So, as of right now, I’d say my favorite place to play is New York, but I’m also drawn to Australia and Asia.
ML: In regards to inspiration, there are plenty of sources: other DJs, the crowd, different cities, places and so forth. Name some DJs/producers, places and things that inspire you.

DM: Quite honestly, pretty much everything around me can act as the source of a beat. Musical inspiration can stem from anything and pop up everywhere as long as you’re tuned in to catching it: From something as predictable as the work of other musicians, to a memorable line in a book, to something as simple as a walk down the street; every source kind of works in unison. I’m fortunate enough to live in downtown Manhattan, which is alive and kicking at all hours of the day/night, everyday, year-round. The amusing characters on the streets, the art, and the parties, all make the city a rowdy and intriguing playground of ideas.
ML: Are there any particular DJs or musicians you would like to work with in the future?
DM: There’s an endless list of musicians in my head with whom I’d like to collaborate. With such a huge roster of talent out there, it’s sometimes tricky to settle on one person or to get connected with them, depending on who they are. The future is like the Wild Wild West, anything goes. Let’s see what’s in store for me! Can I have Thomas Mars from Phoenix on a track??! In terms of DJ’s, I’d love to do something with Eric Prydz to see his skills and techniques at work.

ML: Do you currently have any side projects you are working on? If so, do tell.
DM: Right now, 110% of my focus is channeled on my own tracks. I went into hibernation this winter and stayed in my apartment the majority of the time banging out tracks. Some are finished and some are a “work in progress.” You’ll soon get a chance to listen them!
ML: What have been some of the biggest challenges you have faced while building a name for yourself in the music industry?
DM: I always say “never stop learning, always challenge yourself and seek to create an experience.” Challenge is omnipresent in life and especially when it comes to building up a name in the music industry. The key is embracing every challenge, whether big or small, because nothing easy is worth shooting for. The bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward. Music is like a powerful drug, you become easily addicted to the creation and the game around it.
ML: Tell us a bit about your residency at LAVO NYC.
DM: It’s truly an honor and a pleasure to have a residency at LAVO. Friday nights are gaining steam and continue to get better and better. I couldn’t ask for better people to work with because they give me free reign to fully express myself while we all strive for one thing: to make LAVO THE club people crowd to on Friday nights.
ML: What is one of the biggest perks of being the resident DJ at LAVO NYC?
DM: I get to do what I love to do in one of the most exciting places in the world while also being given the chance to DJ with the best of the best, renowned DJs from around the globe that I’ve always had shortlisted in my mind as people I’d want to work with.

ML: Did your DJ career begin in your hometown in southern France?
DM: Yes, I started when I was 13 years old. I worked nonstop for an entire summer so that I could purchase equipment. In the beginning, I only had one turntable and one mixer so I spent hours and hours scratching. I preferred doing that over anything else and was willing to spend every waking moment practicing. One year later, the time I put in paid off and I won a DJ contest that went down in my hometown. After the contest, a club owner asked me to DJ and, well, the rest is history. I never stopped since then and here I am today.

ML: Besides an obvious love of music, what other factors compelled you to become a DJ?
DM: Music is a powerful force that can instantly perk up anyone’s mood. At the end of the day, my job is to make people happy. What better feeling is there than knowing that not only are you doing what you love but that its effect is making people have a good time? ◊

<div

Her playful use of patterns and clever blend of colors combined with fine quality makes her creations distinct and swoonworthy. Not to go unnoticed is Anya’s obvious inspiration from music that is a recurrent theme through the various collections she designs. The fashionista took time out of her schedule to chat with Mauvais Langue on the subject of “cool people,” the influence of music and the thrills of being a designer.

Mauvais Langue: What inspired you to start your own line?
Anya Lloyd: Art inspired me. I’m a painter by heart, but I love fashion. Creating my own line gave me the satisfaction of doing the best of both worlds. In my own words, I feel like I’m creating sculptures you can live in.

photography: aaron baxter

ML: What motivates you to continue designing?
AL: I’m not gonna lie…cool people. When I see a random awesome chick, I immediately think, “She should wear my clothes!” Most importantly, people that “get it” are the kids that really dig my stuff and are amazed; which makes me naturally want to make more.

ML: Muses?
AL: The first thing that comes to mind is electronica, not a person. Well, my friends too. I often think, “Can i see them wearing this?” If not, I don’t make it.

ML: Where can someone outside of Houston obtain some of your frocks?
AL: Online on my blog, www.chicledeanya.blogspot.com. I usually post pics of things I’ve made. It’s pretty easy to contact me too.

ML: Your line features a ton of edgy styles that have whimsical details. I consider the whimsical details woven throughout your line as your “signature.” For Betsey Johnson, it’s her use of ruffles or stud detail. For Custo Barcelona, it’s punchy patterns amid vibrant colors. Did I get it “right” by saying your signature is all in the details?
AL: YES! I also love textures and patterns. I feel like my clothes are a reflection of my paintings. I usually mix patterns and add an element of surprise. I’m a believer of mixing crazy prints together.

photography: aaron baxter

ML: Any new developments for chicle de anya?
AL: Currently, I’ve really gotten into styling for photo shoots. But with me, who knows? I may surprise you. I might one day quit my day job and start my chicle de anya empire.

<a

There are many musicians with successful lines. In addition, many designers state that certain singers, bands or rappers serve as the key inspirations for their collections. Do you feel that music influences some of the collections you have created or will create?
AL: Music is chicle de anya. The greatest compliment anyone ever told me was: “Your clothes look like music, your patterns are like beats.” When I work, music is on heavy rotation. Bjork, Roisin Murphy, Little Dragon and M.I.A. are women I admire in every way. Like you said, music and fashion are connected at the hip. I think it’s awesome that some musicians are making clothes; it’s an extension of their creativity. I’m personally a fan on M.I.A.‘s line, which is basically hoodies and leggings…which coincidentally is what I’m known for. ♫

<div

It has been over ten years since the start of my teenage years and I’m still a reader of the publication for the same reasons I read it as a teenager: awesome band reviews, unique photo shoots and overall standalone content that sets it apart from the other music magazines. I was thrilled to attend the Alternative Press 25th Anniversary Gallery Exhibition to view the art that some of my favorite musicians created. The exhibition displayed an array of paintings, drawings, photography and sculptures from well-known musicians and eminent visual artists. In addition, the gallery featured a slew of AP Magazine covers of musicians throughout the years. I had no clue that AP Magazine was The Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson’s first magazine to be featured on the cover EVER!
The Plain White T’s were in the house along with photographer Jayme Thornton and Mike “Mr. Kaves” McLeer of Lordz of Brooklyn. I was slightly partial of select art partly because I adored the musicians that produced the work.
Loved:

Jason Pettigrew, Editor In Chief of AP Magazine, strikes a pose!

I had the audacity to ask him what his two favorite AP featured musicians or bands were throughout the time he’s worked with the magazine. He cleverly responded, “That’s like asking me ‘What part of my body are you ok with removing?’ I kind of like the inventory I have here right now. That’s a hard one. There’s so many people to like for so many different reasons. I like people who are honest and forthcoming with what they do, whether it’s My Chemical Romance or Nine Inch Nails or Insane Clown Posse. I prefer people who are honest and aren’t afraid to have an opinion.”

The very quintessence of what the magazine is about is in Jason’s following words: “I can’t wait to hear that new My Chemical Romance. I’ve got one foot in the underground and the one foot in the big scene.” Throughout the twenty five years AP has been around, they have featured both popular acts and unsigned bands. Time will only tell just exactly what tricks AP has up its sleeve for the future years ahead.

-gabbynikki

<a

In honor of all things musical, I had the RAD privilege of interviewing one of CMJ’s most anticipated sets, Emil & Friends. I just can’t get enough of Emil’s debut album, Downed Economy. The album is comprised of a blend of electronica, breakbeat and retro hooks. It’s colorful and hypnotizing melodies satisfies the musical appetite of any listener. The album made me think of this analogy: Simian Mobile Disco makes out with Passion Pit in the sun on a summer day in 1973 while MGMT looks on in approval. That’s Emil & Friends…a standalone band that cannot be compared to anything on the music scene and is a surefire trendsetter. Emil even has an addicting remix of Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead.” It’s refreshing to hear authentic talent that covers all bases of what equates to a well-rounded album. Obviously, I could not wait to ask the Boston transplants questions about the album and other shenanigans.

• I LOVE the new EP! It’s very unique in great way, of course. Where did you guys draw your inspiration?

Emil: Those songs were my first attempts at songwriting, emerging from the trenches of beat-making; drawing a lot from where my life was at. I tried to cover a lot of different emotions, from loud and playful to pensive and whispery. What tied it all together and made me take things seriously was a hospital trip for a heart condition. After that, I realized it was time to get this show on the blogosphere superhighway or at least play these songs for other people. I’d say it was all inspired by a need to give isolation a soundtrack, and solitude a pulse, and put the la-dies in the Merce-des.

• How did you guys meet?

Emil: When the project got signed and I moved to New York this summer to put a band together based on the EP, it just sort of came together, friends of friends, people vouching for people, someone’s synth virtuoso younger brother. Live show’ll be gigging this October. As I have a female range, we are still looking for a female vocalist that I won’t sleep with so the harmonies can fly. I can be a bit of a perfectionist and rehearse eight hours on end.

• Also, who plays what instruments?

Alexe plays drums, Ryane does electronics, Davide plays guitar and sings, Steven plays synthesizers and Emil sings and does a bunch of stuff.

• Any musical influences from past or current bands?

Emil: For that EP (Downed Economy), James Jamerson (“Short Order Cooks”), Frankie Valli (“Specialty Sandwiches”), Nine Inch Nails + Chuck Berry + Grandmaster Flash (“Downed Economy”) and Christopher Parkening (“Fire Flower”), The Ventures/Rusty Draper/Nate Dogg (“The Shrine”), Steely Dan/Michael Mcdonald (“Josephine”), Inti Illimani/Bernard Hermann and Morricone film scores (“Out West”). We both ignore and listen intensely to newer music.

emil is talented as he is cute.

• When will you guys go on tour and where?

Emil: We have some dates with the knocks, then the passion pits, the neon
indians, the grizzle bears, shakti, dave matthews bands, Ron Weasley, and werewolf monthly. We will go to Japan and the U.K. (sorry Australia). We have no plans to blow up. We want to sell out under the radar with a commercial placement so we can afford to make music that we like for attractive people in our immediate neighborhood and make babies and retire.

• Any particular song on the EP that you especially have a rad time performing? Why?

Emil: “Josephine.” We channel Steely Dan at the end and that makes it okay to wake up every morning.

Five Random Questions:
My favorite part of the interview is the asking of random questions. It is the most leftfield of the questions that bring out a person’s true character. Ok, perhaps it’s not that deep and complex as I am making it seem, but answers to the questions still show the person’s humor. I already love the band for their overall coolness and talent levels, but now I am won over even more by their witty sense of humor in regards to the answers of the following questions:

- Cupcakes or cookies?

Emil: For propping up a microphone to record guitar? Cookies.
Steve: Cookies
Davide: Cookies
Alexe: Cookies
Ryane: Cupcakes

- Hipsters or never?

Emil: Been called that, but I’m proud to say it’s related to something creative I do and how compulsive and nerdy I am as opposed to trying to be outspoken with nothing to say. I am waiting for my Fu Manchu replica tank top from Big Trouble in Little China to come in the mail today and it is KILLING me.
Steve: Hipsters
Davide: Hipsters
Alexe: Hipsters
Ryane: Never and these guys are not hipsters

- Skateboard or old school bicycle?

Emil: To get freaky on? Skateboard. Can I say hoverboard?
Steve: Skateboard
Davide: Bicycle
Alexe: Skateboard
Ryane: Tricycle

- ’90s grunge or ’60s hippie?

Emil: ‘60s hip. My friend Tim says that if grunge comes back he will kill himself, seems to be in keeping with grunge. I would take 90s grunge over ’90s hippie though. Yikes.
Steve: Grunge
Davide: ‘60s
Alexe: ‘60s
Ryane: Late ‘80s, new jack swing, hammer pants

- Beauty or brains?

Emil: For selling music? Beauty. For making music and knowing that it takes beauty to sell it? Brains.
Steve: Beauty
Davide: Brains
Alexe: Brains
Ryane (Zombie): BRAINNNNS!

These guys are doing two sets this week in NYC for the CMJ Festival. One show is this Thursday, Oct. 21st at Public Assembly and the second is the following day on Friday, Oct. 22nd at Bowery Electric. As I was blankly staring at the screen and contemplating throwing myself out of the window from frustration and to just see what reaction I would get; “Sticky Thread” blared on my music player. The song’s addicting hooks and vocals had me at the first stroke on the drum. How was I to know that “Sticky Thread” would be a musical gateway drug to my fixation of the California-bred band, Local Natives? Gorilla Manor, the band’s debut album is illustrious to the ears and soul. Their unique blend of multi-vocal harmonies, seductive melodies and lithium battery charged stage presence sets them apart from the sea of indie bands that are currently on the music scene. I had the pleasure of interviewing Andy Hamm, the multi-talented bassist of Local Natives. He and I played the biggest game of phone tag before finally waving the white flag and resorting to reconnecting online.

<img

I think the truth is that we are all just big fans of music in general and are always searching for new artists/bands to get inspired. Currently playing on my computer is….The Walkmen, Health, Holy Fuck and Futurebirds.

You guys have been touring like crazy! What has been your favorite city and why?

Most of the time we don’t really have anytime to explore any of the cities we tour through. Instead, our impression of the city is seen through the people we meet at the shows and in the places we go to eat during dinner. The crowd in Portland a few nights ago was insanely energetic and the smelly fish chicken wings at Pok Pok are very tasty.

The art featured on the Gorilla Manor CD cover is as rad and unique as the music you guys play as a band. Some artists gain inspiration from nature, human emotions, and etcetera. What was your inspiration behind the design of the album cover and other pieces featured throughout your band’s website?

The cover is essentially influenced from the overall attitude/emotions we were all experiencing as a band at the time of the album completion. We were handling everything on our own at that point and stress levels were high. Everyone’s head was filled with excitement along with a lot of nervousness. It felt like our heads were going to explode…and they did.

Influence for the website/posters/etcetera is anything from old VHS tapes to
70′s Australian exploitation films. We actually just posted a new layout for our site today which I’m currently searching for bugs on.
<div

Truly a representation of the producer who prides himself in “good work” and successfully flavours Soca with Soul, Hip-hop, Zouk and Dancehall.

He accomplished his goal of creating the first ever CD to represent a cross section of the Caribbean coming together to do one mix. It represents the islands of Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Barbados, St. Lucia and Dominica, with the heart of the album being none other than his hometown- Grenada or as he intimately calls it- Greens.

While the embodiment of the album was marked for Grenada Carnival, the now Infamous Bubble- Up Riddim featuring none other than Machel MontanoHD and the HD Family, stole all focus and attention. This Riddim was tagged “The Hottest Riddim” for Summer and all Carnival patrons are eagerly awaiting Trinidad & Tobago Carnival to revel to this collage performed by the Biggest Soca Band in the world with none other than Shawn “Mr.Roots” Mitchell on stage as the Band’s bassist.

A preview to this Carnival Experience was rendered on Wednesday September 2nd at the world famous Zen Nightclub located in Port of Spain, Trinidad for the revealing of the HD Family backed by the HD Band. The Homebase Entertainment and e360 degrees teams were on hand to experience the emotion expressed by Mr. Roots while both on and off stage, on the performance of the Bubble-Up Riddim with the old-time favourite original veteran of “ole-time” Raga Soca General Grant and Homebase’s own Nikka Francis, being Guest Artistes of this show.

Now meet the man behind the music in his first ever interview and maybe the closest to intimate that he may ever get when it comes to revealing himself as an individual rather than focus on his musical career- Meet Mr. Roots as many proudly call him.

His Musical genius is well marked by his passion to develop the talent and music of Grenada by allowing it to be heard by mixing it with other islands that are more listened to. His intention- getting them heard on a wider scale and depicting Caribbean integration, togetherness and an interlocking of artistes with their songs.

With his benevolent energies he invested all his confidence into the creation of his music he “personally feels good about it, likes the concept, likes the sound, comfortable about it and thinks that people will appreciate it ” since the future evolution of Fully Loaded is still to come in the near future.

But this achievement did not come without many challenges and sacrifices since Mr. Roots had to balance this with his touring as a member of the HD Band (where he’s intimately known as the infamous bassist), producing music outside of the album and most importantly his family, but in the end he accomplished the equilibrium required and it was totally worth it.

His humility was magnified when asked to describe himself and being hesitant to focus on himself rather than his music he described himself as “trying to use whatever talent God gave me to the fullest….expressing my ideas musically and hoping people appreciate what I have to offer”.

He spoke with pride about his business involvements that span from Producer to Businessman and his social work with youths.

Homebase Entertainment-“I think that we are achieving our goals of developing relationships, getting artistes to expose their talents but it’s all still work in progress”.

E360 Degrees- “It’s my meshing- not just being a producer but developing my different skills and broadening my scope and vision. This is also my avenue to display and show my work as a producer”.

Potential- “My involvement in this is to give back socially to the youth and their development and creating avenues that they will not normally have. We take them in as raw talent and provide many resources for their growth and development as more established artistes, since there are huge costs attached to recording and producing, but here, they come and get their producing, management, marketing and promotions all under one roof and for free. Being the co-owner of this unique and one of a kind concept feels good”

“At the end of the day, it’s all about gaining experience and developing myself. These ventures which all happened at the right time and with the right mix of people will allow me to transcend to even greater involvements……..it’s all hard work but I believe in the quality of my music and I am remaining focused on my goals…….my aim is one day to become a music mogul”.

Mr. Roots, still maintaining his composure, feels good about his music and its accomplishments thus far in being recognized. “I wouldn’t do anything differently…..my whole life has been about taking steps forward…….I took a step from musician to producer, producer to entrepreneur, if I change anything I will disrupt my entire journey in life. My step as an entrepreneur being the Executive Director of e360 Degrees- a Boutique Entertainment and Events Management Company with International wings is really a step forward to achieve my future goals since I hope to own an internationally known Label”.

As he remains focused on his future, Mr. Roots is determined not to fall short and wants to keep his music on a certain level. While it’s long hours and very hard work….”I will continue doing what I am doing now but on a much wider scale”.

“Shawn Mitchell my first and only boy child.

I always knew he would be successful at whatever he does. I’ve wanted nothing but the best for him. He is a sweet and kind person and also gives all of himself with no strings attached. He is such a beautiful soul. I am truly proud of him a mother couldn’t ask for a better son. I congratulate him on his achievements and wish him many successes on his other endeavours.

I must admit at first I wasn’t crazy about him being in the music business but I saw it is what he loves and it’s just who he is. I remember him bringing his musical instruments home from his music class at Erasmus hall high school and he put his all into learning and playing the instruments. He had such a great love for music and learned so quickly. I saw the happiness in his eyes and I knew once he got his chance there was no stopping him. I now know there is no stopping him he only has further to go. Continue to strive my son, continue to work hard and survive. You will always achieve all that you set out to do. I know it and I believe it. I love you more than words can express so once again congratulations” your loving mother Margaret.

“As a little boy he was quick and smart. He soaked up everything like a sponge so it’s of no surprise to me he has grown to be the man he is today. I always knew he was destined to do something great. At a very young age he was already charismatic and had this smoothness about him. I believe those characteristics shows in the way he plays and handle his bass guitar. The caress of the strings and the boom that hits your heart reiterates the love and passion he has for music on many different levels. He has managed to take his experiences, the lessons learned and his admiration for the art form and turn it into his own style and brand.

I am overwhelmed with joy to see him achieve his musical goals and strive to be bigger and better things. He is doing what he loves. He is a humble and gentle loving spirit. I am his big sis but he is quite an inspiration to me, he is a wonderful person and I am very proud of him. He has worked hard and never gave up on his dream. My heart is filled with love for him and I know by the grace of god he will propel to higher heights. I now say congratulations to you Roots on all levels. Keep up the good work, keep doing what you doing. Keep those stars shining brightly, that light we all know as Shawn Mr. Roots Mitchell.” Your sister Jillian Mitchell.

“Being both Grenadian’s, sharing the same passion for the culture of Grenada and it’s advancement made us mesh at first, we gave birth to the Record label, Homebase Entertainment. Shawn and I witness the development of the local artistes, their music enhanced the growth of the label, I must say that I am delighted to have engaged in such an undertaking with him, Rising from strength to strength and expanding our horizons especially with the production of our newly released album ‘Fully Loaded’ we have both grown as producers, music makers and friends. We welcome the new things and expansion of the Homebase family and I’m proud to be a part of this team, looking forward to greater and more positive achievements from here onwards“- Wayne Green, Operations Manager- Homebase Entertainment

“ I indeed look at Shawn “Roots” Mitchell as a musical genius anonymous. He has inspired me in that the music that he does, which comprises of a mixture of genres can captivate not only a nation but the Caribbean and now internationally. I am honoured for the opportunity in getting to know, work alongside and become friends with a man whose passion for music is meshed with his very soul and bears similarity with mine, as an up and coming Producer. Looking forward to working alongside you on the Potential Concept”. Druce Joseph- Director of Events- e360 Degrees.

“Shawn, first of all it was a pleasure doing this interview for your first magazine article, not to mention the joy embedded in me to witness your successes thus far and to see on the horizon your upcoming achievements. It’s an honour to be your co-pilot under the e360 banner during the good times and the trial some ones. Hats off to my co-director- Shawn “Mr.Roots” Mitchell…..” Marlene L. Linda along with her sister, Chrys Wong, creates lovely and fashion-forward collections that are both earth friendly and trendsetting. I absolutely adore the fact that their collections are inspired by past eras in time and beloved scenes or quotes from a favorite book or movie. I didn’t have to think too hard or long as to why The Battalion is worn by such fashionistas as Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ashley Olsen…and will soon be worn by yours truly. The Battalion website states that the goal for the brand “is to be the modern purveyor of green luxury.” This goal is surely one that has been met.

If only someone could have viewed my face prior to the interview with Linda; you would have thought I was a teenage girl about to speak to a crush for the first time over the phone. As I sat all smiles and wide-eyed, I reviewed the Fall/Winter 2009 collection on the site for the fourth time taking more notes on the common thread I noticed throughout the collection. Usually when a collection gives me more butterflies than hearing “I love you” for the first time from a boyfriend I have dated for a year, I know the designer is a keeper. The inspiration of the fall and winter collection was “The Age of Discovery.” Lynda states that the collection was inspired by “the new world, the Louis and Clark expedition, and the state of current…this is a time of change.” Among the materials and techniques used were “hand smocking, faux fur…and veggie friendly faux leather,” says Lynda. I chose three of the hottest pieces (this was really hard to do!) from the collection that every tastemaker should have in her fall wardrobe:

The Bondage Dress – This sexy silhouette is perfect for the night out on the town with the girls. This is easily a classic piece that can be worn year round. Pair with a bootie in the fall and a stiletto sandal in the spring.

The Bondage Dress II

The Slash Back Tee – Rips and tears are THE must-have for this coming season. This tee is perfect because it is a great layering piece for fall when paired with a tank and a sultry tee in the summer when paired with a bikini top underneath.

<a

Every femme fatale should have a classic black legging, a cable knit legging, a legging with funky patterns, and a leather legging. These are great because they are veggie leather which means no animal was sacrificed in order for you to be ahead of the fashion curve. Pair these hotties with a tunic. I will be sporting a pair in the tents during Fashion Week for sure.

<img

The collection in inspired by dances and ballet. Linda aptly describes the collection as “romantic” and says it is the “post-performance ballerina after the adrenaline of being on stage.” I look forward to being mesmerized yet again.

I always love to get the definition of what fashion is from various individuals because you get such a colorful array of answers. Linda’s is by far among one of my favorite viewpoints. “It is a form of expression and gives people identity,” says Wong. “Fashion is supposed to be exciting.” The Battalion is certainly the personification of excitement.

Check out the collections at <a

My faith is my rock so I never worry.

Jazzy: You are a judge of the two top dance-competition shows on television! How did you get each of those gigs?

Shane: The movie “You Got Served” opened so many doors. Nigel saw the movie and requested me for Sytycd. I had been judging hip hop international for 7 years when Randy Jackson came to me and said “I need to talk to you.” Priceless!!!

Jazzy: What do you think the popularity of So You Think You Can Dance and other dance shows have done to make dance more mainstream?

Shane: In my opinion, these shows made parents realize that there’s a future in this dance world, they no longer have to feel like there kids are wasting time by wanting to be dancers. I really didn’t have a lot of support coming up because no one believed in the dance game at the time but I did and that’s why I’m gonna change the world for dancers all over. I want to be the Sean John of the dance world and I need all dancers who aspire to do the same, to join me.

Jazzy: Bring us back to that touching moment in 2007 when Bryan Gaynor, the contestant with scoliosis, performed on So You Think You Can Dance. What was going through your head when you saw Bryan’s dance routine?

Shane: Bryan Gaynor! He’s the kid that changed my life. Just when you think you’ve seen it all here comes a person that had so many obstacles in his life, but yet never let them stop him from doing what he loved. He touched me because he didn’t care what people thought of him, he had a love for dance and no one was gonna take that away from him. He’s the perfect example of chasing your dream. He’s my hero and hopefully well get to work together soon!

Jazzy: As a primarily Hip-Hop dancer, how do you feel about So You Think You Can Dance’s tendency to veer away from hip-hop routines?

Shane: It’s not that they veer away, I think that dancers who don’t train in hip hop make the show suffer. We have some of the best hip hop choreographers on the show but it’s hard to really show our stuff when 19 of the dancers are technically trained and have no hip hop back ground. I think the dancers should train all around so that hip hop can shine on the show. And the hip hop dancers should train in other fields because we have hundreds of hip hop dancers that try out and they’re all given a chance to represent. Unfortunately, a lot of them can’t pick up choreography or do anything outside of hip hop so the show suffers. Dancers need to open their minds and train outside of what they’re used to. The show gives everyone the opportunity to shine, but it’s up to them after that.

Jazzy: How do you feel about the present crews taking part in America’s Best Dance Crew? Who do you think is a forerunner to win?

Shane: I think they all have a ton of potential. I have yet to see someone just blow my mind but it’s still early. I like We Are Heroes and Masssive Monkeys!

Jazzy: In addition to making a living for yourself, you also use your talent to give back to the community. Tell us about the KIIS FM contest that you are a part of?

Shane: I love KIIS FM for doing this and making me apart of something that gives kids yet another opportunity to do what they love. I thank them for asking me to be apart of this event that gives the dancers who can’t get on Americas Best Dance Crew or So You Think You Can Dance because they’re not of age. We’re preparing them!

Jazzy: Your MySpace page also says that you are straight and single. Therefore, what exactly are you looking for in that “special lady”?

Shane: Ha, that’s a tricky question cuz were always saying we want the beautiful, talented, outgoing, funny girl. But once you have all that, all you really want is someone who adores you and loves all your flaws, who can hold her own. Oh and supports you100%! And I’m definitely straight!!!!

Jazzy: You have been advertising “Strawberry Fridays” all over your twitter account (@SPARKS5678). Are you working as a club promoter as well now?

Shane: “Strawberry Fridays” is my baby! I’m trying to develop a spot with my partner Dcat, where anyone 18 and over can have a place to go in the valley. Everywhere that’s worth going is 21 and over and all these dancers that aren’t 21 need a spot! So I’m providing it. Friday the 14 was my first night and it was bomb!!! I want thank everyone for coming out and making my night a success. So get ready for the next one it’s gonna be even bigger!

Jazzy: You have choreographed for a plethora of celebrities. Who are some of the most fun and easy-going artists you have worked with? On the flip side, who are the most difficult people you have had to endure?

Shane: Lindsey Lohan was not difficult it was scheduling but she did her thing. The cast of 90210 was the most fun!

Jazzy: What do you have in store for the next season of So You Think You Can Dance?

Shane: Good question…I don’t know all I know is I’m gonna change the game every opportunity I get. Congrats on the show’s 6th season. That’s beautiful!

Jazzy: Since we all know that you are a multi-talented man, what upcoming projects can we look forward to seeing from you? Dancing? Modeling? Acting? Singing?

Shane: Glad you asked!!!

I just finished my first instructional DVD since like 2002 so I’m excited about that! The dance insider and code black presents ” Shane Sparks Dance Styles.” I’m bringing 4 different styles of my style something that no DVD has done, and on top of that I got a fitness section. Coming soon!

Also “Brinn Nicole Aka Madam”(@BrinnNicole) is my female solo artist. She’s a mix of Lady Ga Ga and Britney in her hay day with a pop hip hop feel and she performs like no other. Then there is, “Forever Heartbreak”(@4everheartbreak) my female pop group 5 girls that sing like a female version of Boys to Men, as sexy as Pussy Cat Dolls and the sweetest girls you’ll ever meet.

You heard it first…I’m working on something solo that’s gonna take the world by storm! Shhhhhhhhh!

<div
