Romp, Skip and Jumper your way into summer

“Sorry, it’s too fashion forward,” my friend explained to the trendy sales clerk at Intermix on Bleecker Street, forgoing the addition of a silky navy jumpsuit to her fashionably conservative wardrobe.

Unfortunately, for my picky pal, avoiding this season’s newest trend — the jumpsuit or romper — is simply unavoidable.

Call it too old fashion, too edgy or too bohemian — you simply should try one on before you call its bluff.

After my friend opted out of jumpsuit ownership, I thought I would discover the pain or pride of wearing one for myself.

Surfing the sales rack of a local boutique, I selected a black wide-legged jumpsuit. I nervously closed the curtain to my dressing room in preparation to loose my jumpsuit virginity — a fashion stigma I preserved all too long.

Once the damage was done I looked in the mirror; “Interesting,” I thought, slipping into complimentary wedge sandals.

Moments later I plucked my AmEx out of my wallet: I was sold.

In five years, will I look at this as a fashion flop? Maybe, but here are some tips to keep summer ladies a step with fashion:

  • Keep the cost under $150 — this might not be a timeless wardrobe piece!
  • Petite ladies can generally pull off shorter lengths, while taller women should opt for the more flattering full length version
  • Loose fitting versions are more flattering and channel the easy going vibe of a hot summer afternoon – save the tight version for yesteryear.
  • Don’t shop alone — a friend’s opinion is key when selecting the right romper!
