Whole Sole Devotion: Can You Really Be Luxe and a Sneakerhead?

It’s always amazed me how the whole process of liking someone tends to change a person. Things you wouldn’t ordinarily be into all of a sudden become a highlight in your lifestyle. Oh, how I scolded my friends for falling into that “trap” of taking on the traits, styles, and hobbies of the person they liked or dated. To my dismay, I now find myself in the same predicament as aforementioned with the adoption of style from the person you are into. I like a guy who is a “sneakerhead.” For those of you who are just as clueless as I was in regards to exactly what a sneakerhead is; Wikipedia defines this type as “a person who owns multiple pairs of shoes as a form of collection and fashion.” Interestingly, I live in peek-a-boo toe booties and black dresses. Yet, I am also a skateboarder. Therefore, I am naturally drawn to sneakers, but that is more heightened now that I am into a guy who has a closet inundated with a buffet of sneakers that would make even Kanye a tad bit jealous. Maybe they can share tips.

I realize being a skateboarder and working in the intense fashion industry is an interesting anomaly. However, I feel like the two balance each other off because I have a love of Badgley Mischka and Anna Sui, yet I can relate to Volcom and Air Jordans because I skate. I had an epiphany: High fashion has kissed hi-tops! For example, Prada has created a line of hi-top sneaks. Agyness Deyn, Noemi Lenoir and Amber Rose are just a few of the poster girls for mixing couture with blazing hot kicks.

Not sure how to rock the look? Take a cue from Rihanna who introduced her Jeremy Scott jacket to a fresh pair of Nike SB Blazer High Premium sneaks.

I nearly had an aneurism when I realized I could customize my very own kicks with Nike iD on the Nike website. Nike iD allows you to choose your own fabric, laces, swoosh, and anything your heart desires. You even have the added bonus of a chosen inspiration for you to work from just in case you don’t know how to unleash your inner Kandinsky. Pricing for custom Nike kicks range from $82-$110. How to DO luxe-sneak-chic this fall:

DO have fun with colors and mixed patterns on your kicks.
DO pair your sneaks with a dark denim skinny jean or zipper legging, a tunic tee, and a cropped tweed jacket. For more edge, dabble in leather accessories – i.e. studded bangles and headbands. Don’t forget the deep olive green nail polish (Try “Dark Room” from Sephora by O-P-I) that will be all the rage through the winter season.
DO decipher which sneaks are solely for working the runway versus shredding the pavement.
DO NOT wear your kicks with a dress. Not only is that a classic faux pas, but it is not flattering. If you insist on wearing a dress with your kicks, make sure it’s fitted and above the knee. Pair with a legging.
DO NOT try hard to pull off this “look.” Fashion is fun, remember?!
