Zac Posen 2009 New York Fashion Week

70s-cut3Light, pretty, feminine and fun, Zac Posen’s Fall/Winter 2009 New York Fashion collection almost has the feel of Spring. The colors are subdued like Fall, but the mood is distinctly light and joyous.  A lot of tight fitting feminine dresses with appropriate frills suggesting something romantic and airy.

This dress is indicative of the general style. Strongly feminine and glamorous, form-fitting fabric and in video, you can see that it moves really well.

The color and pattern are subtle but not too dark or moody as in a lot of Fall/Winter clothes.

Along with his successes and his cadre of celebrity fans, Posen has made enemies as well as he is often called “showy” and “melodramatic”. In this show, Posen hired the 5 Browns—a brother and sister piano troupe—to play on five Steinways set in the middle of the runway.

Maybe this is the price of his success at a very early age (He got his first break at the age of 20 when he made a dress for Naomi  Campbell.

It is dresses like this that have helped develop his reputation for creating feminine and glamorous clothes. This dress also shows his ability to combine sophistication with lightness. The long black party gloves and the pattern and fit of the dress all suggest sophistication but the ensemble still seems fun and light.

As in previous fashion shows, Posen has mixed many styles – hip and edgy with frilly and fun. This interesting combination in his sensibility has earned him fans such as P Diddy, Nicole Richie, Anna Wintour, Joel Madden, Alicia Keys and Claire Danes. He also famously dressed Kate Winslet in a figure-hugging black floor-length number at the BAFTAs.
